ROBERT L. PERROW GENERAL MERCHANDISE LEDGER

Tall cloth bound with leather bands original ledger of Robert L. Perrow General Merchandise, with Perrow's ink stamp indicating Silver Creek and Rustburg, Virginia. 355pp with 249pp of entries and then about 50 blank ruled pps and finally a mixture of entries and blank pages. The entries begin in 1892 some endings seem to be in 1896 and others in 1902. The entries are presumably sales from Perrow's store during this time. They are written in both ink and pencil. Perrow's name is printed in large letters on the front cover "R. I. Perrow / Silver Creek Virginia / RLP 1892." The endpapers are written on with other glyphics and with his name/initials repeated several times. A Virginia newspaper (News Leader) has an article published Nov. 29, 1918 that identifies Perrow as the sheriff of Campbell County and that his son, Robert, Jr., was killed in the war on the Meuse in October and that another son was gassed in action weeks earlier. Of course ledgers like these provide a wealth of data on business and commerce, particularly what is being bought and sold and for how much. The ledger is well-worn but in good overall condition. We nevertheless must note that he board corners and some edges are exposed and the leather cover at the bottom edge of front board separated from the board. Joints and hinges sound.
