On the evening of July 8, 1962, a Thor missile rose from Johnston Island in the central Pacific carrying a 1.4-megaton thermonuclear warhead. Nine minutes later, at an altitude of 400 kilometers, the warhead detonated. The code name was Starfish Prime. It was the fifth shot of Operation Dominic and the second of Operation Fishbowl, the high-altitude nuclear test series conducted by the United States in the summer of 1962 in response to the Soviet resumption of atmospheric testing the previous year. This edition reproduces, for the first time in annotated form for a general readership, the preliminary technical report prepared at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory within ten days of the event: a hundred-and-twelve-page field document compiled by Francis Narin for LASL and Joint Task Force 8, declassified by DTIC in 1985, and largely unread outside the specialist defense-history community ever since.
The reader will find here the first quick-look numbers on neutron flux, gamma flux, X-ray yield, debris expansion velocity, and magnetic field disturbance; the first eyewitness reports from Johnston, from Kwajalein 1,400 miles to the west, and from the KC-135 aircraft stationed near French Frigate Shoals; the first descriptions of the beta and debris pancakes that formed along the geomagnetic field lines above Johnston and in the southern conjugate area near Tonga; and the first indications that the radar-blackout effects the planners had hoped to produce, as a tool for defeating Soviet anti-ballistic-missile radars, had been both briefer and more localized than expected. Also here: the first documented account of a burst whose electromagnetic pulse knocked out streetlights and microwave relays nine hundred miles away in Honolulu, whose radiation would kill Telstar 1 in the months that followed, and whose artificial belt of trapped electrons would remain detectable in the geomagnetic field for the next five years.
Nimble Ultra has supplied a Publisher's Note, a full historical introduction placing Starfish Prime in the context of the 1958 moratorium, the 1961 Soviet test series, and Operation Dominic, a twenty-five-entry glossary defining the physics and operational terminology, and an annotated further-reading list pointing to Glasstone and Dolan, the DASA technical summaries, the EMP Commission reports, Van Allen's original papers, and the modern peer-reviewed reanalyses. The centerpiece of the editorial apparatus is a two-thousand-word essay written in the VantaBlack voice that Nimble Ultra reserves for its most consequential documents: unsparing, technically precise, absorbing euphemism the way Vantablack absorbs light. The essay traces what Starfish Prime still predicts for a civilization whose telecommunications substrate has become five orders of magnitude more sensitive than the 1962 Hawaiian grid, what a modern high-altitude detonation would do to the low-earth-orbit constellation of Iridium, Starlink, and their successors, and why high-altitude nuclear detonation remains, six decades after the Partial Test Ban, on the contingency menu of every nuclear-weapon state.
This is a book for readers serious about nuclear and space history, for researchers interested in primary-source documents from the atmospheric-test era, for policy analysts tracking EMP and anti-satellite contingencies, and for any citizen who believes the empirical basis for planetary-scale risk decisions belongs in the public record. The 1962 document is reproduced as a facsimile, with DTIC redactions preserved and no alterations to the government text. The physics documented in August 1962 has not changed in the sixty-four years since. What has changed is the civilization that depends on the environment Starfish Prime demonstrated could be altered.
