Print on Demand. This book investigates the political climate surrounding slavery in the United States, primarily focusing on the decades leading up to the Civil War through the lens of the Congressional Record. The author, a politician himself, was alarmed by the absence of any reliable history of slavery as it existed in his time, and so he turned to the official record of Congressional debates to fill this gap. His work is thus a unique contribution to the historical record, as it captures not only the political machinations of the time but also the opinions and sentiments of the major players in the slavery debate. The book begins with a brief history of slavery in the United States, starting with its introduction during the colonial period. The author then examines the debates over slavery that took place in Congress leading up to the Civil War. He highlights the efforts of abolitionists to end slavery and the bitter opposition to these efforts by pro-slavery forces. The book also discusses the numerous compromises and concessions that were made in an attempt to resolve the slavery issue, including the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and the Compromise of 1850. The author concludes by arguing that the Civil War was ultimately the result of the failure of these compromises. He also emphasizes the role that slavery played in shaping the political and social landscape of the United States, arguing that its legacy continues to impact the nation today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Reseña del editor
The reaction from the struggle for independence and the manly part the Negroes had taken in the war as soldiers and fellow-workers with the other patriots, naturally attracted attention to their social and political status. All the leading men of the nation were, at that time or soon before anti slavery men and slave holding was never so unpopular 1n this country. Jefferson's opposition to slavery was well-known.3 He both wrote and spoke against it and no man of his time did so much as he did to check its progress. Madison and Henry also opposed the institution.' But this opposition did not go so far as to demand immediate and unconditional emancipation, for the system had already taken too strong a. Hold under the fostering influence of England to permit men like the above to anticipate Garrison.
