Paperback. This is a large-format edition, designed for readers who value substantial historical and literary studies in a durable and elegant format. "PUSHKIN AND THE BIRTH OF MODERN RUSSIA""Poetry, Empire, History, and National Culture" Alexander Pushkin stands at the point where literature, politics, empire, and national consciousness converged in early nineteenth-century Russia. This book places his life and writings within the historical world that formed them, showing how the emergence of modern Russian literature was inseparable from war, aristocratic culture, serfdom, imperial expansion, censorship, political rebellion, and the transformation of the Russian language. The study begins with the Russia inherited from Peter the Great and Catherine II: an empire governed by autocracy, sustained by noble service and serf labour, yet deeply influenced by European culture. It examines the Napoleonic invasion of 1812, the Russian campaigns in Europe, the formation of the generation that produced the Decembrists, and the political expectations that followed victory over Napoleon. Particular attention is given to the extraordinary linguistic world of the Russian aristocracy, where French often functioned as the language of education and society while writers such as Karamzin, Zhukovsky, and Pushkin were creating new possibilities for literary Russian. "Eugene Onegin" is examined as a detailed document of noble life: estates, debt, education, marriage, inheritance, social ambition, duelling, metropolitan fashion, provincial society, and the economic foundations of aristocratic leisure. Pushkin's southern exile opens a wider view of the Russian Empire. The Caucasus, Crimea, Bessarabia, Cossack communities, Muslim populations, military administration, and imperial expansion provide the historical setting for works such as "The Prisoner of the Caucasus", "The Fountain of Bakhchisaray", and "The Gypsies". The political crisis of December 1825 and the reign of Nicholas I form another central part of the book. Pushkin's complicated relationship with imperial authority-combining censorship, surveillance, patronage, archival access, and personal contact with the emperor-is reconstructed without reducing him either to a court poet or to a simple revolutionary opponent of autocracy. His mature historical writings receive extensive treatment. "Boris Godunov", "The History of the Pugachev Rebellion", and "The Captain's Daughter" reveal an increasingly sophisticated interest in legitimacy, rebellion, popular violence, Cossack autonomy, peasant grievances, administrative weakness, historical memory, and the mechanisms by which states preserve or lose authority. The final years in St Petersburg are examined through money, publishing, court rank, marriage, debt, gambling, reputation, and aristocratic honour. "The Queen of Spades" and "The Bronze Horseman" become part of a larger analysis of metropolitan society and imperial power. The fatal duel of 1837 is reconstructed within its social context before the book follows the transformation of Pushkin after death-from celebrated writer to national cultural symbol, through nineteenth-century criticism, Dostoevsky's famous 1880 speech, imperial commemorations, Soviet canonization, and modern Russian memory.
