He Wrote 10 Million Words. He Sold 500 Stories By Age 33. Then He Wrote Down His Secrets.
For decades, Robert Turner’s 1948 writing guide was a lost treasure, a ghost whispered about by authors and collectors. Now, this legendary manual is back in print, ready to arm a new generation of writers with the hard-earned wisdom of a master craftsman.
Forget stuffy textbooks. With the sharp wit and blunt humor of a pro who’s seen it all, Turner gets straight to the point. This is not a dry, academic lecture; it's a laugh-out-loud, conversational guide from a "Dutch Uncle" who believed in telling it straight. His advice is as direct and unpretentious as a splash of good vodka.
Inside, you'll discover the timeless, no-nonsense techniques that built an entire era of storytelling:
-
A "Phooey to Technique" Philosophy: Learn why Turner dismissed academic rules and focused instead on the one thing that matters: creating pure, simple entertainment.
-
Create "Real People," Not Puppets: Master the art of crafting believable, human characters with flaws and emotions your readers will recognize and root for.
-
The Power of Underplay & Indirection: Uncover the professional secrets of "underplaying" action and using "indirection" to make your scenes more powerful and effective.
-
The Business of Writing: Get an insider’s look at the pulp publishing world, from how editors think to why some stories get rejected and others sell .
To further immerse you in the era, this edition is richly illustrated with full-page, high-resolution reprints of classic pulp magazine covers. Get inspired by the stunning and lurid artwork from legendary titles like
Thrilling Detective,
Startling Stories,
Out of This World Adventures,
Blue Ribbon Western,
Planet Stories
and Mammoth Mystery that defined the look of a generation.
Grounded in the practical demands of 1940s magazine publishing, Turner’s advice on character, plotting, and the writer's mindset remains startlingly relevant. This historical document is a masterclass in the gospel of the grind from a pro who knew that you don't survive on art—you survive on work.
If you're ready to stop sweating the rules and start writing stories that grab readers by the throat, this is the guide you've been waiting for. Pick up your copy today for yourself or the aspiring writer in your life! It would be an excellent gift for any writer.

Descripción de la tienda
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
