A clear, scholarly guide to the Hebrew text of the Psalms that helps ministers, teachers, and students understand the original meaning with practical insight.
This edition presents Joseph A. Alexander’s classic commentary on the Psalms in a literal, explanatory format designed for real study. It emphasizes understanding the Hebrew text directly, with notes that illuminate word choice, grammatical features, and key interpretive questions. The focus is on meaning and explanation, rather than devotional or critical commentary, to equip readers to interpret and apply the Psalms in teaching, preaching, and personal study.
Ideal for ministers, teachers, and students, the book offers careful translation practice, context, and explanations that reveal how the Psalms function in worship, liturgy, and sacred literature. It also provides historical background and a carefully explained sense of structure to help readers grasp the Psalter’s composition and its place in biblical tradition.
- Verse-by-verse analysis that clarifies Hebrew terms, grammar, and syntax
- Notes on literary form, liturgical use, and the Psalms’ role in worship
- Contextual information about authorship, structure, and historical setting
- Practical guidance for preaching, teaching, and scholarly study
Ideal for readers seeking a rigorous, accessible gateway into the Hebrew Psalms and their classroom-ready explanations.

Reseña del editor
These religious poems represent many different forms. There are hymns of praise and worship of God; many take the form of prayers for help, protection, and salvation; and others are pleas for forgiveness. They may be songs of thanksgiving for God's blessing or petitions for the punishment of enemies. The prayers are both personal and national. They portray the most intimate feelings of one individual or are the expression of many. Some of the Psalms represent the needs and feelings of all the people of God.
The Psalms were quoted by Jesus, cited by the writers of the New Testament, and became the treasured book of worship of the early Christian church, from its very beginning.
The Hebrew name for Psalms was The Book of Praises. The present name derives from the Latin Vulgate, which followed the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Old Testament). It is the second of three Old Testament books considered poetical: Job, Psalms, and Proverbs. These three were also called books of truth. Some scholars feel the final editing probably took place in the time of Ezra. Thus the dates when the individual Psalms were written must range through many centuries.
