The book begins with a brief description of the author's life, which seems to have begun in, perhaps, the 1940s, as we are told he suffered, in common with many Chinese people, from the effects of World War II. He learned the Choy Lee Fat style of Kung Fu in an effort to improve his health, later turning to the Northern Praying Mantis style, under the direction of the famous Master, Wong Hon Fan. Northern Praying Mantis is a style of Chinese martial arts, sometimes called Shandong Praying Mantis after its province of origin, and is one of the best known styles of Northern kung fu, encompassing many styles, the three main ones being the six.
