"The Practice of Teaching in the Secondary School" is a foundational work in American educational theory, detailing the influential "Morrison Plan" for mastery learning. Henry C. Morrison presents a systematic approach to secondary education that moves beyond rote memorization toward genuine student understanding and functional learning. The text defines the teaching process through five distinct steps-exploration, presentation, assimilation, organization, and recitation-creating a structured framework for both teachers and administrators.

Morrison explores the psychological and pedagogical principles necessary for effective classroom instruction, emphasizing the importance of the unit method. By categorizing learning into distinct types-such as science, appreciation, and practical arts-the work provides specific strategies for different academic disciplines. This comprehensive guide addresses the challenges of secondary schooling, focusing on the development of the individual student through disciplined study and clear instructional goals.

As a significant contribution to early 20th-century pedagogy, this work remains essential for those interested in the history of education and the evolution of instructional design. Its rigorous analysis of classroom practice offers timeless insights into the relationship between teacher, student, and curriculum.
