An ORIGINAL Copy in Contemporary - Original late 19th Century - half leather, (spine and corners are leather) with black/brown speckled cloth covered boards. 5 raised gilt decorated bands to the spine, but lacks the spine title label - the impressed title from the original label is just about visible however, giving the impression of a Title. The calf is rubbed and scuffed to all extremities, with all corners rubbed through to the boards, and has two small holes in the rear edge of the spine. Now all the leather is newly polished with the rubbed corners 'closed' and the covers overall look G plus/VG minus. Internally the book has Burgundy Marbled endpapers (but lacks the front free endpaper). No Inscriptions or Marks, but there is some LIGHT foxing (pale yellow/brown spots/patching) to the text throughout. The foxing does NOT affect the Plates, however, all of which are Very Clean. (vi) + 36 pp text followed by 2 monochrome 'Design' plates then 100 numbered Beautiful Chromolitho plates, each with an accompanying Titled Text leaf. The last 3 plates in this book are loose in the binding but not trimmed or clipped. The font inner hinge has split the original 'built in' original reinforcing strip between the endpapers and is coming loose. Unsurprisingly as this is a Huge Heavy Book! . All other hinges are sound. There is a small Binders' label on the bottom of the rear pastedown endpaper stating 'Bound by Blackie and Son Limited' (The Publishers). The page fore-edges are all browned but not affecting any pages - more 'ingrained dust of ages' than discolouration. Overall a Clean, Tight and Bright copy. "Today the Audsleys are mostly remembered for their publications on architecture and decoration. Few of the original patterned interiors that the brothers designed remain intact, but their work also appeared in pattern books such as this one created for professional and amateur decorators to copy. These books bought them international repute. George Audsley started his own collection of oriental arts, the influence of which can be seen in patterns from books like this one 'The Practical Decorator and Ornamentalist' which he wrote with his son Maurice in 1892." .
