Paperback. "Practical Criticism" is a foundational pillar of modern literary study, revolutionizing the way readers interact with poetry and prose. This influential work emerged from a series of psychological experiments in which readers were asked to provide anonymous evaluations of poems, stripped of their authors' names and historical contexts. Through this process, I. A. Richards identifies the common pitfalls and psychological barriers that hinder clear interpretation, such as sentimentality, inhibition, and technical preoccupation. The book serves as both a rigorous analytical study and a practical guide for developing a more disciplined and perceptive reading practice. It delves into the complex relationship between language and emotion, exploring how the interplay of sense, feeling, tone, and intention shapes our understanding of a text. By championing a focus on the internal structure of the work rather than the biography of the writer, "Practical Criticism" laid the essential groundwork for the New Criticism movement. It remains a vital resource for students, educators, and anyone seeking to deepen their critical engagement with literature and the mechanics of interpretation. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work was reproduced from the original artifact, and remains as true to the original work as possible.
