With a Virginian Provenance. 1795 Pleader by "A Gentleman Of Considerable Knowledge and Experience" From the Library of Jacob Kinney of Augusta County, Virginia [Pleading]. [Great Britain]. The Pleader's Assistant; Containing a Select Collection of Precedents of Modern Pleadings, in the Courts of King's Bench and Common Pleas, &c. Viz. Declarations, Avowries, Pleas, Replications, Rejoinders, Demurrers, &c. In a Variety of Actions: Including the Most Usual as Well as Special Matters; With Forms of Writs in Several Cases: Interspersed with Cursory Observations and Instructions. The Whole Drawn and Settled by the Most Eminent Counsel of Their Time, viz. Serjeant Agar, - Bootle, - Belfield, Sir W. Chapple, Serjeant Draper, Sir J. Darnell, Serjeant Eyre, - Hawkins, - Hussey, Mr. Hardcastle, Mr. L. Robinson, Sir M. Wright, The Late Mr. Warren, and Others. Dublin: Printed by J. Stockdale, 1795. iv, [4], 520, [20] pp. Octavo (8" x 5"). Contemporary calf, raised bands to spine, blind fillets and lettering piece to spine. Light rubbing to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, front board beginning to separate, rear joint cracked, corners bumped and somewhat worn, early owner signature (Jacob Kinney) and early Philadelphia bookseller ticket to front pastedown, front free endpaper partially detached. Light browning, somewhat lighter in places, and light foxing to text. $250. * Second and final issue of work first published in London in 1786. With an index and table of cases. According to the Preface, this book was originally compiled by "a gentleman of considerable knowledge and experience at the bar, for his own more immediate use" (iii). The ownership signature may be that of the Jacob Kinney who was County Clerk of Augusta County, Virginia, from 1793 to 1818. Kinney also served as a state senator. The bookseller's ticket is that of "H. & P. Rice, / Booksellers, / No. 16, South Second, and / No. 50, Market-street, / Philadelphia." Henry Rice and Patrick Rice were prominent booksellers and publishers in late eighteenth-century and early nineteenth-century Philadelphia. English Short-Title Catalogue N12155.
