Il romanzo è articolato in tre parti nelle quali si presentano le vicissitudini dei personaggi, in una alternanza tra presente e passato. Candida va ogni giorno a trovare Pietro, suo padre, in un reparto di rianimazione, e nel frattempo porta avanti il suo lavoro presso una Fondazione, dove si occupa di ragazzi disabili e ha Angelo al suo fianco, un uomo innamorato e paziente. Nel recarsi al capezzale del padre, Candida cerca di fare chiarezza sul proprio passato nel quale albergano il ricordo della madre Lucia - scomparsa quando lei era ancora una bambina - e il dubbio di un abuso subito. La sua vita è sospesa in un territorio irrisolto. Forse la salvezza può trovarsi nella radice del primo bene ed essere l'origine da cui partire per trovare ciò che sua madre le indicava con l'ausilio di un occhio supplementare disegnato, con biro, sul palmo di una mano. Candida capirà; che per cominciare a vivere davvero, è necessario concedere perdono innanzitutto a sé stessa per il male di cui ha dovuto farsi carico nell'infanzia, e che spesso, orrore e incanto camminano per mano, e si assomigliano.
