Neuware - 'Parson Primrose' offers a comprehensive exploration into the life and literary achievements of Henry Francis Cary, the renowned English clergyman and man of letters best known for his definitive translation of Dante's 'Divine Comedy'. Spanning the late 18th and early 19th centuries, this biography delves into Cary's intellectual journey, from his early poetic endeavors to the monumental task of rendering Dante's masterpiece into English blank verse-a feat that earned him the admiration of contemporaries like Coleridge and Lamb.Beyond his scholarly pursuits, the work illuminates Cary's extensive network of friendships within the Romantic literary circle. It provides a detailed account of his career at the British Museum and his role as a central figure in the cultural landscape of his time. By examining his personal correspondence and professional challenges, the author paints a vivid portrait of a dedicated scholar whose work bridged the gap between Italian medieval literature and the English-speaking world. This biography serves as an essential resource for those interested in the history of literary translation, the Romantic era, and the life of one of the 19th century's most influential yet modest intellectuals. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
