TWO VOLUMES COMPLETE. Paradise Lost (1795) TOGETHER WITH Paradise Regained (1796). John Milton's (1608-1674) famous pair of epic poems in a late 18th century edition. Volume 1, dated 1795, with engraved vignette title page & frontispiece. Volume 2, dated 1796, with letterpress title page & frontispiece, plus engraved vignette at final page. Frontispiece in each volume, 3 plates in volume 2. Curiously, volume 1 has no letter-press title page (just the engraved vignette title page), apparently as issued. Includes a life of John Milton by Elijah Fenton, criticism on Paradise Lost by Samuel Johnson, & a note on Milton's moral character from Mr. Hayley's Life of Milton. In addition to Paradise Lost + Paradise Regained, this collection includes Samson Agonistes, poems upon several occasions, sonnets, psalms, a Latin ode to John Milton by Joannes Baptista Mansus (Poemata), & select notes on Paradise Regained. With advertisement to volume 1, & preface to volume 2. Paradise Lost was first published in 1667, & Paradise Regained was first published in 1671. Full publisher details as follows: VOLUME 1 - Published as the act directs, Aug 1, 1795, by T. Longman, B. Law, P. Dodsley, J. Johnson, C. Dilly, G.G. & J. Robinson, T. Cadell, R. Baldwin, I. Scatcherd, Ogilvy and Speare, W. Lowndes, G. and T. Wilkie, G. Kearsley, Vernor and Hood, T. Cadell, Junior, and W. Davies, and S. Hayes. Volumes uniformly bound in FULL diced LEATHER, raised bands, gilt lettering & gilt floral design within compartments to spines, gilt ruled edges, gilt turn-ins, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers. Slight handling wear, small chips to spine heads, mild foxing, otherwise a nice clean tight solid leatherbound set. Incorrectly bound (at page 192/193 in each volume) as follows: Volume 1 = pp.1-192, then to volume 2 pp.193 to end / Volume 2 = pp.1-192, then to volume 1 pp.193 to end. Pagination should be 382pp (vol. 1) + 428pp (vol. 2). Also, ad leaf at rear of volume 2 should have been placed at rear of volume 1. All pagination is complete, though incorrectly bound, as noted. Correct pagination should have been: Vol. 1: xlvi + [ii], ii + 382pp, ad + [i], blank. Vol. 2: [iv] + 428pp. All blanks are present (2 leaves at both front & rear of each volume in addition to the marbled endpapers). Heavy set of volumes, extra shipping may be required. RARE.…
