Paracrinesignaling is a form of cell signaling in which the target cell is near('para' = near) the signal-releasing cell. A distinction is sometimesmade between paracrine and autocrine signaling. Both affect neighboringcells, but whereas autocrine signaling occurs among the same types ofcells, paracrine signaling affects other types of (adjacent) cells. Somesignaling molecules degrade very quickly, limiting the scope of theireffectiveness to the immediate surroundings. Others affect only nearbycells because they are taken up quickly, leaving few to travel furtheror because their movement is hindered by the extracellular-matrix.Growth factor and clotting factors are paracrine signaling agents. Thelocal action of growth factor signaling plays an especially importantrole in the development of tissues. In insects, Allatostatin controlsgrowth though paracrine action on the corpora allata. In matureorganisms, paracrine signaling is involved in responses to allergenstissue repair, the formation of scar tissue, and blood clotting.VDM Verlag, Dudweiler Landstraße 99, 66123 Saarbrücken 72 pp. Englisch.…
