You already understand automation at the level of voltage, current, and cause and effect. You have watched a motor start, a valve open, a conveyor stop on a sensor trip. But when the conversation shifts from wiring a panel to writing a text-based control program, that hard-won hands-on knowledge can suddenly feel like it does not transfer, and that gap is becoming harder to ignore as modern industrial control moves toward Structured Text.
Ladder logic remains common on the plant floor, but Structured Text is increasingly the language of choice for the arrays, math, loops, and multi-step sequences that ladder diagrams were never designed to express cleanly. Many technicians and engineers were never taught the computer science ideas underneath this shift, so they end up copying patterns without fully understanding why a program behaves the way it does, or why it breaks in an unfamiliar way.
This comprehensive guide closes that gap from the ground up, and then keeps going until you can design and build genuinely complete, working systems. It starts with the four ideas that sit underneath every PLC program ever written, data, logic, memory, and control flow, and walks through a full scan cycle in plain language before a single line of code appears. From there, it builds toward complete fluency in Structured Text syntax, naming conventions, and the IEC 61131-3 data types and structures that define the modern automation programming standard.
Working through this book, you will be able to:
- Understand how a PLC actually executes a program, phase by phase, so you can predict its behavior instead of guessing at it.
- Translate a real automation problem into pseudocode and a flowchart before writing a single line of Structured Text.
- Apply Boolean logic and truth tables to design conditions that hold up under every case, not just the ones you happened to test.
- Work confidently with built-in timers, counters, edge detection, loops, arrays, and sorting algorithms.
- Structure larger programs into functions and function blocks, and design state machines and sequencers that recover gracefully from unexpected conditions.
- Design and code complete applied systems, including tank-filling and level control, multi-zone conveyor coordination, pumping stations with fault handling, robot positioning, a multi-level car park, and a staged car wash sequence.
- Apply a systematic, repeatable method for troubleshooting a malfunctioning program instead of relying on trial and error.
Key topics covered include computer science foundations for automation, PLC hardware and component integration, Structured Text syntax and IEC 61131-3 data types, scaling and digital filter calculations, flow control and loop constructs, program structuring, state machine and sequencer design, arrays and algorithm efficiency, complete applied system design, a four-concept troubleshooting framework, industrial cybersecurity fundamentals, and responsible use of generative AI tools in Structured Text development.
This book is written for electricians, technicians, and controls or automation engineers who already understand hardware and want a genuine computer science foundation for text-based programming, as well as automation and engineering students preparing to work with modern, standards-based control languages. No prior programming background is assumed.
Add this comprehensive resource to your working library, and begin closing the gap between what you already know about hardware and what modern Structured Text programming asks of you, one clearly explained concept at a time.
