This book will stand as the definitive account of place names of Roman Britain, as recorded in the classical sources. Part one treats the history of the subject, the linguistic and textual aspects, and each of the sources of information: the Greek and Latin authors (with texts in translation); Ptolemy; the Antonine Itinerary and the Peutinger Table; the Ravenna Cosmography; the Notita Dignitatum; and Inscriptions. The chapters on Ptolemy and the Itineraries are illustrated with maps. Part Two is an Alphabetical list of names-some 460 in all-in Latin form, each entry being divided into sections on the sources, on derivation and on the identification of the places in modern terms, with map references in each case, and occassional notes on matters of further interest. There is also an appendix of doubtful names and an index of modern names. The book will be invaluable to all those concerned with the place names of Roman Britain, from archaeologist or historian to students of language and amateur archaeologists.
