THIS SMALL "MEDICAL" BOOKLET (CIRCA 1920'S) DESCRIBES THE MEDICAL EMPIRE OF THE SON OF RAY VAUGHN PIERCE WHO UNDOUBTEDLY WAS THE PREMIER DISTRIBUTOR OF QUACK PATENT MEDICINES BEGINNING IN THE 1860'S IN BUFFALO, NY. AT THE HEIGHT OF HIS POPULARITY, HE MANUFACTURED AND DISTRIBUTED MILLIONS OF BOTTLES OF PATENT MEDICINE ANNUALLY. MANY OF HIS PATENT MEDICINES CONTAINED OPIUM AND ALCOHOL. HE PASSED AWAY IN 1914 AND HIS SON VALENTINE MOTT PIERCE TOOK UP THE PATENT MEDICINE BUSINESS AND ALSO ESTABLISHED THE "WORLD'S DISPENSARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION" AND THE INVALIDS HOSPTAL OF BUFFALO, NY. THOSE INSTITUTIONS SPECIALIZED IN WOMEN'S DISEASES INCLUDING STERILITY, CHRONIC INFLAMMATIONS,WOMB DISPACMENTS AND DYSMENORRHEA (PAINFUL MESTRUATION). THE BOOKLET CONTAINS 11 SEPIA COLORED PHOTOGRAPH PORTRAITS OF THEIR PHYSICIAN STAFF AND 9 SEPIA COLORED PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE INTERIOR OF THE INVALIDS HOTEL AND SURGICAL INSTITUTE AS WELL AS THEIR 6 STORY LABORATORY WHERE DR. PIERCE'S FAMOUS "PROPRIETARY MEDICINES" WERE PREPARED. A PHOTO OFTHE 6 STORY BUILDING UTILIZED TO MANUFACTURE HIS PATENT MEDICINES IS ON THE REAR COVER. THERE IS A PHOTOGRAPH OF THEIR X-RAY LABORATORY THAT ILLUSTRATES AN UNPROTECTED PHYSICIAN OR PERSON PERFORMING FLUOROSCOPY ON A STANDING FEMALE, THERE IS ANOTHER PHOTO OF THEIR DEEP X-RAY THERAPY "OUTFIT" THAT WAS USED TO TREAT OVARIAN AND FIBROID TUMORS OF THE UTERUS. THEIR SURGICAL SUITE IS ALSO PORTRAYED. THE PIERCE'S, FATHER AND SON, WERE EXPERTS IN ADVERTISING AND PROMOTION OF THEIR PATENT MEDICINE PRODUCTS.
