Hardcover. "Origin of the English Rite of Freemasonry" is a definitive historical study that investigates the development and evolution of Masonic traditions within England. Written by the renowned Masonic scholar William James Hughan, this work provides an in-depth analysis of the transition from Operative to Speculative Masonry, focusing particularly on the emergence and significance of the Royal Arch degree. The text explores the complex relationships between various grand lodges and the structural changes that defined the English Rite during its formative years. Hughan meticulously examines historical records, charters, and early ritualistic developments to clarify the origins of specific degrees and ceremonies. By tracing the growth of the Royal Arch, the author highlights its pivotal role in the completion of the Master Mason's degree and its eventual status within the broader Masonic system. This scholarly exploration remains a vital resource for those interested in the history of fraternal organizations and the intricate heritage of the Craft. Hughan's authoritative perspective offers readers a clearer understanding of how the English Rite established its unique identity and influenced Masonic practice globally. It serves as both a rigorous academic inquiry and a fascinating look into the traditions that have shaped Freemasonry for centuries. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
