Paperback. "Origin and Development of the Disciples" provides a comprehensive historical account of one of the most significant religious movements born on American soil. Written by Alonzo W. Fortune, this work meticulously traces the evolution of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) from its early nineteenth-century roots to its status as a major Protestant denomination. The book explores the fundamental principles that drove the movement's founders, including the quest for Christian unity and the desire to restore the church to its primitive, New Testament foundations. Through a detailed narrative, Fortune examines the contributions of key figures such as Alexander Campbell and Barton W. Stone, illustrating how their distinct yet converging visions shaped the identity of the Disciples. The text delves into the challenges and triumphs faced by the movement as it expanded across the American frontier, addressing both theological developments and institutional growth. "Origin and Development of the Disciples" serves as an essential resource for students of American religious history and those interested in the Stone-Campbell Movement, offering valuable insights into the social and spiritual forces that defined this uniquely American expression of faith. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
