She did NOT order winter.

But on a Tuesday it moved into the yard. It did not ask about the yard first — it just took the whole thing. Icicles went up on the porch rail. The birdbath froze solid. Wind was left lying around everywhere.

Then it gave the house a dress code. Big coats. Hats. Two socks per foot. Outside, the trees lost all their clothes, and she knows exactly who did it. Even the sun moved out. It used to stay all evening. Now it drops by and leaves before dinner.

This yard is not a free hotel. So one very organized girl picks up a pencil and files a MOVE-OUT NOTICE. TO: Winter. FROM: The owner of the yard. MOVE-OUT DAY: Tomorrow.

She reads it to the yard. Loudly. Twice. Once more toward the sky, in case the main office is up there.

Winter does not move out. Winter moves further in. At night it breathes on her window. Rude. By morning her notice is back on the porch, frozen solid, shiny, official. Winter has put her paperwork on ice.

Then one quiet night the tenant lays down carpet. Wall to wall. Yard to yard. The thick kind. The sparkly kind. Not cheap. And the whole street is invited.

From the creator of I Didn't Order a Baby, I Didn't Order a Monster, I Didn't Order a Kiss, I Didn't Order Grandma, I Didn't Order a Hiccup, I Didn't Order a Cat, and I Didn't Order a Substitute comes an eighth deadpan-funny story about a big feeling — this time, the long grey stretch before a season finally shows you what it came to do. It lets a kid serve notice on the weather, takes her paperwork completely seriously, and then hands her a lease with the rent payable in snow days.

Perfect for:

• Kids ages 4–8 who would like the seasons to check with them first
• Families counting down a long winter from the wrong side of the window
• First-snow, snow-day, and winter-holiday gifts
• Read-alouds with one deadpan landlord and one very persistent tenant

40 pages of warm, funny winter illustrations, one extremely official notice, and a lease nobody expected to sign.
