Descripción

Leather; English language; 8vo - over 7.75" - 9.75" tall; a worn but readable copy of scarce title; book possibly a privately bound project, the Old and New versions being bound upside down to each other, with the relevant title on the matching board, thus technically the book has no rear board but two front boards; the Old Version (as it was known) is 'The Whole Book of Psalms collected into English Metre' by Thomas Sternhold and John Hopkins (this copy published by Cambridge University, probably in 1793) and the New Version is the 'New Version of the Psalms of David fitted to the tunes used in churches' by N Brady and N Tate, published in 1792 for the Company of Stationers; there is no actual indication of when the book was actually bound togehter; (Sternhold and Hopkins published their English psalmody in 1562 and it remained the standard English version for the next two centuries; Brady and Tate published their version in 1696); unfortunately (but conveniently) the book has split into two halves - the Old and the New; the board of the New half has detached; the title page of the Old version has the section with the date torn from the bottom but a scrupulous comparison of the sellers listed with various publication dates suggests 1793; the flyleaf of the Old version is entirely taken up with a hand-written copy of the Xmas Hymn 'Hark, hark what news the angels bring' by William Knapp; some of the free blank papers at the end have been used for writing practice with scratchy pens; the New half has some water staining to the top corner and some slight crinkling across the top of the page edges but the staining rarely impinges upon the text and the text is still perfectly readable; please there is very little foxing to the pages of either half, though there is the occasional mark; please note that there is no musical notation in the book; all in all a somewhat unusual book. Your book will be securely packed and promptly dispatched from our UK warehouse. For buyers outside the UK we now offer significantly lower rates on our airmail shipping.
