Críticas: International Bulletin of Missionary Research, Outstanding Books for Mission Studies (2003)Joel Carpenter -After reading Dana Robert's biography of A. T. Pierson, it is difficult to understand why someone so important to American religious history has not, until now, been subjected to a scholarly study. It is also difficult to imagine that someone could do a more thorough job than Robert in discerning and portraying Pierson's life and times. This is the best book about American evangelicals from 1860 to 1920 since George Marsden's Fundamentalism and American Culture. What makes Robert's treatment especially important is that it gives the foreign missions movement its due as a central theme in our religious history. That perspective is long overdue.-E. Brooks Holifield -Dana Robert's engaging biography tells the story of one fascinating and provocative leader in the Protestant conservative movement, but it also deftly illumines multiple transitions in American religion. It provides fresh and insightful perspectives on revivalist piety, fundamentalist theology, evangelical women, evangelicalism and social class, religion and social reform, worldwide pentecostalism, international Protestant networks, American foreign policy, and the ever-expanding sweep of conservative Protestant missions. Lucid and deeply informative, this book chips away skillfully at stereotypes that have impeded our understanding of religion in American history.-James H. Moorhead -A. T. Pierson exemplified many of the divergent trends within late nineteenth-century Protestantism. A promoter of missions and an advocate of premillennialism and holiness theology, he also supported ecumenism and demanded greater justice for America's urban poor. This significant though little-remembered figure has long needed a well-informed, evenhanded biography to explore his complexities, explain them in a scholarly but readable fashion, and set them in their larger religious context. Happily, he has finally found that treatment in this fine work by Dana L. Robert.-Ralph D. Winter -Judging by the life and work of A. T. Pierson, the label 'conservative evangelical' once meant something very different than it does today -- both more liberal than the liberals and more conservative than the conservatives. Any 'evangelical' today will be jerked wide awake as Dana Robert skillfully and authoritatively follows the brilliant career of Pierson, one of the most impressive and influential personalities in the American church. Of special value is Robert's command of the broad context of American church history. Her masterly account -- inherently valuable for all Christian leaders -- gives us much on which to ponder and reflect. For anyone exploring the roots of evangelicalism or concerned for its integrity today, this book is an absolute must. Occupy until I Come is simply extraordinary in its erudition and scope.-American Historical Review -A commendable effort to recover [Pierson's] role in the world of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Anglo-American evangelical thought and practice. . . Robert presents a readable and persuasive case for Pierson's significance as not only an apostle of missions but one of the fathers of twentieth-century fundamentalist theology.-
