As in the First Edition, the Update presents introductory nutrition information to non-majors in an applied format that discourages memorization and promotes long-term understanding of the material. The authors capitalize on students' natural interest in nutrition by demonstrating how nutrition relates to their health and their everyday lives, and by addressing–and debunking–commonly held misconceptions students have about nutrition. The applied nature of the book is also reflected in the functional organization of the micronutrient chapters. With so many vitamins and minerals, their accompanying toxicity and deficiency symptoms, and their key food sources to remember, students can quickly become overwhelmed. Janice Thompson and Melinda Manore solve this teaching challenge by presenting the chapters on micronutrients in the context of their function, rather than their classification. This approach encourages students to develop a conceptual framework in which to organize the information and helps them understand the role of nutrients in their bodies and in their own health.
The book's applied approach can also be seen in the chapter-opening quizzes, case studies, end-of-chapter Nutrition Debates, and other active learning features that teach students how to be savvy consumers of current nutrition news and claims.

Acerca del autor
Janice Thompson received her Ph.D. from Arizona State University in exercise science physiology and nutrition. She is currently a research assistant professor at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center in the Department of Internal Medicine.
Melinda Manore earned a doctorate in human nutrition with a minor in exercise physiology at Oregon State University, and a master's degree in health education from the University of Oregon. She is currently a professor in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Sciences at Oregon State University.

Efectos del desistimiento
