What happens when the woman expected to nurture, heal, feed, or protect becomes the center of a murder story?
In Nurtured to Death: Women, Murder, and the Price of Caregiving in New England History, public historian Erica R. Buteau investigates more than a century of women accused, convicted, acquitted, suspected, and sensationalized as killers—and the stories that formed around them.
Beginning with suspicious deaths in Lancaster, New Hampshire, Buteau follows the evidence through arsenic-laced kitchens, sickrooms, exhumations, murder trials, newspaper scandals, hospitals, and modern courtrooms. This work of historical true crime asks a harder question than “Did she do it?”
What does the evidence actually allow us to say?
From Hannah Kinney and Lydia Sherman to Jane Toppan, Amy Archer-Gilligan, Harriet Nason, Mary Cowan, Lizzie Borden, Kristen Gilbert, Pamela Smart, Sheila LaBarre, and Lindsay Clancy, Nurtured to Death examines how gender, caregiving, mental illness, motherhood, media, and public fascination shape how women accused of violence are remembered.
Some confessed. Some were convicted. Some were acquitted. Some were never tried. Some became famous anyway.
Buteau separates toxicology from rumor, legal outcomes from later legend, and confirmed victims from the dead who were only ever suspected. She reconstructs the domestic world that made poison accessible and difficult to detect: home medicine, patent remedies, life insurance, private nursing, elder care, burial customs, household labor, and the enormous trust placed in women who cooked, medicated, comforted, and watched over the vulnerable.
The book also explores the evolution of the female killer in American true crime. Why did women rally around Lizzie Borden? Why did the televised Pamela Smart trial become a national spectacle? Why do nurse-killer cases such as Jane Toppan and Kristen Gilbert remain so disturbing? Why are women who kill so often forced into a choice between “monster” and “victim”?
And what happens when that question reaches the present?
While this book was being written, the Lindsay Clancy trial unfolded in Massachusetts. Her 2026 murder trial ended in a mistrial after jurors could not agree on criminal responsibility. The case focused national attention on postpartum psychosis, maternal filicide, mental illness, the insanity defense, nursing, motherhood, and public empathy. Hundreds of women dressed in pink rallied for Clancy, while others insisted attention remain on her children, Cora, Dawson, and Callan.
By placing that case beside Andrea Yates, Latarsha Sanders, Aileen Wuornos, Genene Jones, Dorothea Puente, and generations of New England women shaped by accusation and notoriety, Buteau shows how much has changed—and how much has not.
Nurtured to Death is also a book about the true-crime audience itself. From poison pamphlets and sensational newspapers to televised trials, podcasts, documentaries, social media, and courthouse advocacy, Americans have long turned murder into story. But stories can harden into history, and repetition can become evidence in the public imagination even when the record says otherwise.
This is not a catalog of murderous women.
It is an investigation into how suspicion becomes story, how story becomes history, and why the strongest verb the evidence earns should always be the one we use.
Rooted in court records, newspapers, trial publications, vital records, legal decisions, medical literature, genealogy, and archival sources, Nurtured to Death is for readers of historical true crime, New England history, women’s history, unsolved murder, poison cases, female serial killers, criminal psychology, forensic history, and American crime history who want the mystery without sacrificing the evidence.
