Paperback. Praise for Colin Brightwell & Nothing Good Ever Happens in a Flyover State "Colin Brightwell brings tremendous compassion and insight into the world of desperate men, alcohol, and violence. Here is the Midwest you'll never know but won't forget." -Chris Offutt, author of The Reluctant Sheriff "In Nothing Good Ever Happens in a Flyover State, Colin Brightwell crafts a gritty, unflinching portrait of life on the fringes - where survival is measured in shifts on the killing floor, bets made at backstreet dog fights, strained silence between partners who've lost too much, and a down on his luck musician who prays to Hank Williams. With a sharp eye for detail and a voice soaked in raw authenticity, Brightwell explores themes of despair, loyalty, and a quiet resilience in the forgotten heart of America. For lovers of grit lit, and in the school of Donald Ray Pollack and Daniel Woodrell, this collection introduces a young Missouri writer worth celebrating." -Daren Dean, author of The New Salvation and Other Stories, Roads, and The Black Harvest "With remarkable humanity, Colin Brightwell illuminates the gap between his characters' dreams for themselves and the realities they make, the tenderness they possess and the coarseness they project, the men they desire to be and the men they fall short of being. Nothing Good Ever Happens in a Flyover State disproves its own title. It is a beautiful and compassionate debut." -Sheila Sundar, author of Habitations "Colin Brightwell writes with crisp, sharp language that is littered with the images of heartbreak and desperation - smoky barrooms and honky tonks and lonesome highways that run deep into the dark. These stories are filled with people on the fringe, emotionally, spiritually, physically. In other words, these stories are filled with the best kind of tales, those torn with the clawmarks of hanging on." -Michael Farris Smith, author of Salvage This Worldand Desperation Road Cowboy Jamboree Pressgood grit lit.
