8vo. An incredible piece of Civil War and United States Sanitary Commission history. This historic piece was given as a gift by Secretary of the 1863 Northwestern Sanitary Fair in Chicago, E.W. Blatchford, and owned by a Civil War nurse at the Marine Hospital, in New Orleans. The book, an early printing (1861), belonged to a nurse Latham (?) with her signature and placed at Marine Hospital in New Orleans in1864. Laid in is a collection of other Civil War ephemera, including what appears to be a small tin type of Nurse Latham, with a very faint signature on its back that looks to match the faint signature of the nurse in pencil in the book. Also ;laid in as part of the collection is a contemporary ph0tograph of Florence Nightingale, attack to a piece of cardboard placed at Southport, Louisiana. Affixed with adhesive to the title page and its facing page are three contemporary USSC paper devices, as well as a printed narrative indicating that Florence Nightingale had donated two copies of this title to the USSC for the benefit of wounded soldiers. The front endpaper features two affixed reports documenting USSC procedures and business. Brown pebbled cloth. Square tight binding. Lacking front and rear endpapers. Occasional pencil underlining and dampstains. Presents handsomely in a clear, archival mylar dust jacket. Certainly an authentic, one-of-a-kind piece of USSC and Civil War medical history.
