The New Improved Standard Dictionary (1935) by J. M. Parrish ? The Literary Press ISBN: None Condition: Good Published: 1935 Offered by: Crappy Old Books There was a time when discovering the meaning of a word required an actual dictionary, a reasonable command of the alphabet and sufficient physical strength to retrieve a substantial volume from the bookshelf. There were no search engines, no predictive text and certainly no electronic assistant enthusiastically inventing definitions when it couldn?t remember the correct ones. Welcome to The New Improved Standard Dictionary , compiled by J. M. Parrish and published by The Literary Press in 1935, when the English language was apparently considered insufficiently improved and required yet another comprehensive examination. The title itself is a magnificent achievement in commercial optimism. Not merely a dictionary, nor even a standard dictionary, but a New Improved Standard Dictionary . One suspects that somewhere in the publishing office a particularly enthusiastic gentleman proposed adding "Extra Super Deluxe", only to be restrained by colleagues concerned about the available space on the cover. Promoted as an entirely new dictionary for school and home, this substantial reference work belongs to an age when dictionaries were indispensable domestic equipment. Every respectable household was expected to possess one, preferably within convenient reach of anyone engaged in writing letters, completing schoolwork or settling an argument concerning whether an obscure word actually existed. And what an extraordinary linguistic world it preserves. Published in 1935, the volume reflects an era when wireless meant radio, computers were generally people employed to perform calculations, and the internet was still beyond the imagination of most ordinary mortals. Countless modern expressions had yet to enter common usage, while numerous perfectly respectable words have since disappeared into the linguistic wilderness. That, of course, is precisely the attraction of an elderly dictionary. It is not merely a reference book but a historical record of how language was understood at a particular moment in time. This particular copy retains its handsome original red cloth binding , with decorative lettering and a classical lamp motif on the front cover. The design suggests enlightenment through learning, although the lamp presumably requires neither electricity nor an expensive subscription. Condition: Good. A respectable vintage hardback showing age-related wear, rubbing and handling, particularly around the spine and corners. Its binding has endured approximately nine decades of linguistic upheaval, which is more than can be said for many fashionable expressions. Naturally, there is no ISBN . In 1935, books were identified by their titles and publishers, without the assistance of numerical codes, online databases or algorithms recommending entirely unrelated products. Offered by Crappy Old Books , where old words are welcomed, obsolete definitions are cherished, and grammatical correctness remains an entirely optional extra. A delightful collectible for lovers of language, vintage reference books, educational history and the lost art of looking something up without first turning on an electronic device. Proof that the English language never stops changing, even when the dictionary stubbornly refuses to.…
