Dig, dig, dig! On one warm spring night, millions of insects push up through the ground at exactly the same moment. They're cicadas, and they've been waiting underground for the past 17 years!
If your child thinks cicadas are just noisy summer bugs, this book is about to change everything. A single male cicada sings at 100 decibels, as loud as a lawnmower right next to your ear, and has to turn off his own hearing while doing it or the noise would damage his ears. Their 13 and 17-year underground cycles are both prime numbers, which scientists believe confuses every predator on Earth. A mass emergence can pack over one million cicadas into a single acre of land. A mother lays up to 600 eggs in a tree branch and flies away forever, leaving each nymph to find its way underground completely alone. Every page delivers something your child will want to run and share.
"The Nature Kid's Guide to Cicadas" is written for curious kids ages 7–12 who want to know the real story behind one of nature's most extraordinary insects. How does an insect that spends 17 years doing almost nothing underground know the exact moment to dig up and join millions of others? Why do cicadas choose prime numbers for their life cycles? What makes a chorus of millions so loud that people inside their homes with windows shut can still hear every note? Your child will find out, and they will never hear that summer buzz the same way again.
Short sentences and surprising facts build reading confidence while keeping even older kids hooked from first page to last. Chapters cover everything from sap drinking and shell shedding to love songs, mass emergences, and the remarkable solo journey every nymph makes from treetop to underground on its very first day of life.
A book for every kid who has ever heard that deafening summer buzz and had absolutely no idea what was making it.
There are more than 3,000 species of cicadas on Earth, and somewhere underground right now, millions of them are quietly waiting for the soil to hit 64 degrees. That is the kind of wonder that sticks.
Thousands of young readers have explored the Nature Kids Guide series. Your child is next!

**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
