Forty-one graves. Forty-two names.
When Emmett Loomis dies in a chair in the back room of the funeral home his family has run since 1908, the town of Harrow Bend, Ohio, buries him exactly as he asked: no eulogy, no flowers, and not beside his wife.
He wanted the Quiet Row - the corner of the cemetery where, for thirty-four years, he had buried at his own expense the people nobody came to claim. Forty-one small stones set flush with the grass. A name, a year, nothing else. It was the one unmixed good thing anyone in three counties could say about him.
Then his son finds the ledger.
Margo stayed. She took the license at twenty-seven and has handled every death in the county for twenty years, alone, at two in the morning. Teddy left at nineteen, lost four hundred thousand dollars of other people's money in Chicago, and came home owing sixty-one. Ceci drove down from Columbus with a casserole and a marriage she has not yet admitted is failing.
Between them they have a building, a mortgage nobody can explain, an offer from a man who buys small funeral homes for a living, and one page in a green cloth ledger with forty-two entries on it.
Forty-two names. Forty-one stones.
The extra name belongs to a woman this town decided, in the spring of 1991, had run off and left her husband and her nine-year-old daughter. The daughter is forty-three now. She opens the diner four doors down at half past five every morning, the way she has since she was twenty-two.
And one of the Loomises has known where her mother is buried for sixteen years.
Set over one winter in a river town of nine hundred people, The Names He Kept is a novel about the arithmetic of a good man - what it costs, who ends up paying it, and whether thirty-four years of quiet decency can ever settle a debt that was never yours to forgive.
Some things a town agrees on. Some things it simply stops looking at.

Acerca del autor
Sed Filho is a Brazilian author who writes heartwarming stories about healing, second chances, and the quiet beauty of starting over. His novels blend emotional depth, atmospheric settings, and characters who feel remarkably human-flawed, hopeful, and unforgettable.
Driven by the belief that stories can serve as safe harbors in turbulent times, Sed creates books that offer comfort, tenderness, and the warm glow of a guiding light. Whether exploring seaside towns, emotional journeys, or the delicate courage found in ordinary lives, his writing invites readers to slow down, breathe, and rediscover the small miracles around them.
In addition to fiction, Sed also writes about personal development, mindset, and emotional well-being, always with an emphasis on clarity, empathy, and transformation. His narrative voice is known for its sensitivity, introspection, and the gentle way it blends simplicity with emotional resonance.
When he's not writing, Sed can be found researching new ideas, exploring coastal landscapes for inspiration, or crafting stories that remind readers that light-soft, steady, and resilient-can always be found, even after the darkest storms.
