Most fire deaths in the US occur in homes. Automatic sprinklers can help reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by about 80 percent. The 2022 edition of NFPA 13D, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems in One- and Two-Family Dwellings and Manufactured Homes, features up-to-date criteria addressing every aspect of sprinkler design and protection, water supplies, equipment, and placement. Installers and contractors need the latest edition of this standard to address different types of construction, work with the latest technologies, and help reduce risks while maximizing efficiency. Updates in the latest edition include the following: -Townhouses were added to the standard's scope. -Obstruction tables were modified for ease of use. -Criteria for protecting pipes and tubes from mechanical damage was added to Chapter 5. -Requirements for multipurpose and passive purge systems were added to Chapter 7. -Clarifications addressing fuel-fired equipment and sprinkler protection were added to Chapter 8. -A new section on tiny homes was added to Chapter 8. -Criteria for sprinklers under—or adjacent to—beams were revised, with concealed sprinklers being added. -The method for determining when system components are subject to freezing and need protection was modified; it now requires the use of current temperature data. -A new annex on incentives for residential fire sprinkler use and advantages for builders, developers, and communities was added.
