A forgotten Portuguese historical novel of love, war, exile, and memory - now translated into English. In the streets of Porto, an old beggar known only as Misfortune wanders with a guitar beneath his arm, a faithful dog at his side, a silver medal from the Peninsular War on his breast, and a mysterious gold ring on his finger. To the crowd, he is a curiosity - a relic of poverty, madness, and defeat. But behind the ring lies a life marked by love, vengeance, loss, and the violence of Napoleon's invasions of Portugal.Originally published in the nineteenth century, The Mysterious Ring: Scenes from the Peninsular War is Alberto Pimentel's dramatic romance of private tragedy set against one of the most turbulent periods in Portuguese history. From the French occupation of Porto to the battlefields of Europe, from family estates and military hospitals to exile, mourning, and redemption, the novel blends historical fiction, romantic melodrama, and urban legend into a moving portrait of a man broken by war and preserved by memory. This English edition includes a translator's preface, chapter notes, and an afterword, offering historical and cultural context for modern readers while preserving the emotional force and literary atmosphere of the original Portuguese text. For readers of classic historical fiction, nineteenth-century European literature, Napoleonic-era novels, and rediscovered works from the Portuguese literary tradition, The Mysterious Ring offers a haunting story of love, sacrifice, and the mysteries that survive long after history has moved on.
