First edition (same date on title and copyright page). Brown cloth boards with blind stamped Dillingham logo on front and rear boards and gilt lettering on spine. A bit spine cocked. Head of spine pushed; wear to tail of spine; tips of corners exposed; scuffed. Previous owner's name and date (1899) on ffep. Pages generally clean. 437, plus [3] pp. ads. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. Mary Jane Holmes (1825-1907) was a popular American author. This is a collection of three short stories: Mrs. Hallam's Companion (originally serialized in Lippincott's Magazine, 1894), The Spring Farm, The Hepburn Line (originally serialized in Lippincott's Magazine), and Mildred's Ambition (originally serialized in Ladies Home Journal 1888-89).
