Paperback. "A Modern Introduction to Logic" stands as a pioneering achievement in twentieth-century analytic philosophy and remains one of the most comprehensive surveys of the field. Written by L. Susan Stebbing, this seminal work bridges the gap between traditional Aristotelian logic and the transformative developments of mathematical and symbolic logic. The book offers a rigorous exploration of the principles of reasoning, covering topics such as the theory of propositions, the nature of deductive systems, and the foundations of scientific methodology.Stebbing's approach is characterized by its clarity and philosophical depth, moving beyond mere formalisms to address the fundamental relationship between logic, language, and reality. It provides an exhaustive treatment of both the formal structures of thought and the epistemological implications of logical analysis. By integrating classical syllogistic logic with modern functional calculus, the work serves as an essential guide for understanding the evolution of formal thought. "A Modern Introduction to Logic" is an indispensable resource for students of philosophy and mathematics, offering a lucid and systematic introduction to the tools of critical inquiry and the structural underpinnings of human knowledge. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
