Chapter One

From Near-Death to Spiritual Awakening

Every day, people nearly die in horrendous crashes, or due to medical emergencies. But for some of those people, something interesting happens to their consciousness during that "near-death" time. They often have meaningful experiences translated through the symbolism of their own belief system. They may see visions, see inner light, and hear voices. Regardless of how this experience manifests, it is real for every person. As a result, these survivors often make dramatic changes in their lives. Such repercussions show that meaning and purpose exist in everything, especially in overpowering, seemingly negative events. It may take months or years for the real reasons to emerge. Circumstances have to evolve in one's life before a deeper comprehension occurs, and wisdom comes even later, as we construct the bridge to the true source of power.

The quest presented here is my true life story, but it is not about me. Instead, it is about the power of the inner source of our being and how it emerges into our world. This is an adventure story of body, mind, and spirit, about the inner power releasing itself into life. My quest contained the seed for eventually learning to be the power of the source and tap into the essence for solutions to humanity's needs.

By now, you may be sensing that there is an inner self within yourself. My near-death crash and three-day coma are merely the moments in time when my deeper inner being began piercing the surface of mundane consciousness. Seeing below the surface is challenging, and we need to stay focused until it becomes clear. This section portrays the adolescence and mid-adulthood of my own unfolding purpose.

After I got out of the hospital the second time, I was unaware as to what my future might hold. Fortunately, I had enough money to be able to return to the university. That fall I remember a crystal-clear dream about a pretty, athletic blonde girl whom I was destined to meet. Sure enough, she showed up the next quarter in speech class. She was like honey, smooth and sweet, and I was amazed by the insight that a dream had actually materialized.

I worked nights as a security guard to support myself. Having a lot of time to myself allowed me to practice developing my intuitive, psychic, precognitive faculties of mind. Two years later I took a break from my studies and traveled to Maui, Hawaii. I lived outside on little Makena beach, in Hana on the rainy side, and sustained myself by eating avocados, guavas, mangoes, and other fruits that grew wild. I formed a connection to Nature that I would not understand for years. I left Maui and my next stop was Duncan, Oklahoma. There, my brother Scott and I created a small-time operation we named Rainbow Lawncare. We worked in the dirt, and this enhanced my connection to Earth. Four months later, inspiration struck me, and I went back to St. Cloud State University in central Minnesota. I read two books by Fritjof Capra, The Tao of Physics and The Turning Point, books on quantum physics and the cultural transitions humanity is facing.

In order to sustain myself through the final stretch at school, I returned to my old security guard job. In 1982, I worked eerily silent twelve-hour shifts at night in a machine factory, miles from town. Early one morning about 3 a.m., I suddenly had an incomparable insight. I looked at a fifty-gallon drum approximately thirty feet away and saw a profoundly clear, clairvoyant image of particles of matter existing in the space between me, the air, and the drum. The particles seemed to be floating in the air between us. The drum, the air, and I were completely connected, and there was no separation! Then, an even-more-bizarre awareness came to mind: I visually saw and recognized that the air had the same amount of physical density that the drum and my own body had! We were all connected and part of a oneness that was all the same energy, all with the same density! Some of the incomprehensible ideas about quantum reality suddenly became sensible, and in that moment a quantum awareness astounded me. I began to realize the unity of all things, years before I would learn that a physical atom is 99.99999% space!

Another night that I was on duty, an event occurred that really astonished me and proved to be a precursor to the future of my psychic, spiritual development. I had free time between my security rounds, so I sat quietly in a comfortable chair and entered a relaxed state. Suddenly, a booming, powerful voice emerged from within my mind, seemingly coming from the back of my head ... "THERE IS BUT ONE MOMENT AND THAT IS FOR GOD!"

It was megaphone-loud, inside my head! I knew that it was not from my conscious mind because my linguistic patterns are not structured that way. Overwhelmed, I could hardly think or walk for the next few hours. The impact completely took me off guard, and I stumbled through the hourly rounds. Something deeper had been revealed to me, and I had no idea that the future would hold even more bizarre events.

When I told my step-mother what happened, all she said was, "Your mind can play tricks on you." As I came to understand society, it was clear that our mystical experiences, the inner truths of being, are not usually recognized unless granted validity by religion or psychology. At an early age, perhaps as early as age ten, I had sensed that our supposed separation from God is not correct. The current events in my life made me determined to seek and find inner truths. I pressed on, studying writings on spirituality, love, and the mystical traditions that have existed for thousands of years. Undoubtedly, in my mind, the common human essence of humanity transcends mere religion and dogmatic thinking. By 1985, my sense of knowing began to morph into greater confidence. Occasionally I articulated something that made sense to others. There was more going on than the conscious mind could be aware of, and I was determined to explore what that was. During this time, these poetic words came into my mind:

Brothers and sisters
What is there to hear?
That message within us
Knowing, with our inner ear.

Near-death participants talk about an inner light, and culturally, we often refer to the "Light of God." Physicists and meditation masters alike discuss the qualities of light, although from very different perspectives. In simple terms, physicists describe the contents of light as quantum energy packets. They calculate energy moving at the speed of light. Light is energy, and energy is conscious. Meditation masters in India describe their experiences with inner light from the source of God as the light emerges into their awareness in very deep, prolonged states of meditation. Light is special, and I was about to learn how it would impact me personally.

It was autumn, 1985, in Minnesota, and I was completing my last quarter at the university. Every morning, I went into a physiologically relaxed state and imagined my brain and entire body immersed in a scintillating, brilliant, white light. I peered inwardly with my mind and drew out inner light from between the particles of matter that make up the atoms of my body. In a meditative state, gradually, I became the light. I imagined that my entire physiology was light, until a single thought permeated my mind and being: "I AM LIGHT!"

That quarter, as I went through the challenges of taking all upper-level classes, I didn't give much conscious attention to the "light" during the day, but at the end of the quarter, an astonishing realization struck me—I had received straight A's! This might not be extraordinary for some people, but it was for me. Although my classes were all senior-level, fairly difficult, I had effortlessly earned A's without focusing on that as my intention. The transformational power of the light affected me in many ways. I began thinking about traveling to India, and I felt more compassionate about the state of humanity.

Thinking back, I realize that the light-energy meditation may have unconsciously propelled me into a direction that caused me to sell everything I owned and travel to India. One more pertinent aspect of those early years deserves attention because it provides a basis for understanding events in my future life. After graduating, I did not have a strong interest in material acquisition, or in a career. But I was alive, and the inner fire burned brightly. I devised and practiced a grounding technique in an attempt to keep me from being too ethereal, so I could function effectively in daily tasks. I sat in a chair with my feet flat on the floor. I imagined and felt Earth energy coming up from the center of the Earth, up through the center of my left foot, up my left leg, and into the base of my spine. This is called the root chakra, a spiritual energy center where we are grounded in physical reality. Earth energy continued to flow through my root chakra, down through my right leg and into the Earth. I felt Earth energy flowing through this circuit, and after ten to twenty minutes I felt my feet fused into the Earth, rooted in place. I felt it so strongly that if I were to try to walk, I couldn't: I was stuck in the Earth. My body felt completely grounded to Earth, fused and one with Earth energy. My conscious awareness felt absolutely and completely inside my body, in contrast to being up in my head or outside of myself. "I AM GROUNDED!"

Grounding my energy with Earth, in my body, profoundly affected me, my daily life, my actions, and my behaviors. I found myself bicycling up to ten miles a day, lifting weights, and doing sit-ups, and before I knew what was happening, my body was in superb physical condition. It was fantastic. I wondered if grounding would benefit others and if there was genuine applicable meaning for other human beings.

I asked myself, "Could other people have small miracles if they would learn to ground their energy in the here-and-now and allowed themselves to be conscious inside their body, loving and appreciating it, realizing that they're here in life, on Earth, and are intimately connected with Earth?" One answer is that the need for external sources of assistance, such as drugs, would drastically diminish. Perhaps we would not give away our power to other people, letting them tell us what our bodies need. There would be no need for it. Our physical health can be extraordinary if it is given the proper inner nourishment through conscious connection with our inner source and the resulting healthful thoughts and actions. I had no idea that, years later, the inner white light and grounding energy would evolve into transformational, life-changing events.

Grounding with Earth energy charged my body with vibrant health and positive energy. Soon after, another mystical-tree experience captivated me when I spontaneously engaged in a remarkable connection with the tree in my front yard. I sat next to it and went into a meditative state.

After an undefined period of time, a compelling vision opened in my mind's eye: brilliantly clear mental pictures of the hillsides in Indonesia with a river flowing at their base. It was naturally intoxicating, and my awareness truly expanded. The next image, or communication from Earth, was a shocking scene of the trees stripped from the hillside! The rains had deteriorated the hillside, with mud and debris now partially blocking the river. It was an unfortunate and unpleasant long-term flow. The cause of this disaster was corporate greed, giant companies with vast wealth and no vision other than profit. The scene in my mind was real and also a symbolic representation. Earth was crying out, pleading for sane and rational treatment. My heart went out to Earth.

The mental images continued. Farther down-river, there in Southeast Asia, a dam had become clogged. It was choking and threatening the life of ... life! It was disaster and misery, plain and simple. The tree conveyed an understanding to me in no uncertain terms, however gently, that we humans and Earth do not need giant dams to produce electricity. We do not need to strip the hillsides of precious living creatures. There were alternatives. A new visual image appeared vividly in my mind: a single, thin wire leading from the land down into the river and at the end of it a simple pod, oval-shaped, gray-colored, about the size of one's thumb. As water flowed past the pod's oval-shaped body, it created electricity that flowed up the wire to a magnifying station. I did not perceive how it produced electricity, but the value of the symbol had been received. There is no need to ruin the environment.

After I opened my eyes and looked around, dark thoughts of betrayal and piercing feelings of distrust welled up within me. I felt strongly that we are all being used by the false gods of materialism and the greedy instincts of less-evolved souls. Our materialistic leaders are enticed by greed, and a lack of vision follows. I had to live with it. We're still living with it. Acid rain, contaminated underground water supplies, polluted rivers and lakes, damaged forests, massive garbage dumps, plastic, nuclear waste, toxic chemicals, ozone deterioration. It's time to wake up! We need to realize we're not separate from plundering corporate capitalists. We are all simply aspects of oneness, and to an extent we're all responsible and we're all involved.

That mental-image communication from the tree and Earth impacted my feelings as well as my mind. I changed me, it expanded my perceptions, and it challenged me. I knew that those individuals who owned the world's largest corporations probably had revolutionary inventions available to them that they were not using, simply because the corporations wouldn't make billions of dollars! The images I received in the meditation by the tree were communication, not fantasy, and intuitively, I knew they were real. The entire event was clear, direct, and profound. This was Earth's truth being expressed to me. Trees are the planet's communicators. They are aware, conscious beings simply existing as a different form of consciousness. They are a different aspect of the multidimensional oneness that we are all a part of. No doubt about it.

Considering our potential to ruin the planet, I remembered that our professor in international studies had given us an 8-1/2 x 11 inch sheet of white paper completely covered with tiny dots. Our task was to conceive what it represented. Any ideas? Well, it was the number of nuclear warheads on the planet! I had been disturbed by this realization. To top it off, this new phenomenon with the tree pushed me over the edge. I sold my worn-out, curb-yellow pickup, my stereo system, and a few other meager possessions and purchased a ticket to India. I had no idea of what I was getting myself into, but I sensed the power of a spiritual quest awaiting me there. My mother and my brother were helpful and supportive; other family members thought that I was nuts, and the thought crossed all our minds that I might never make it back. But powerful spiritual experiences awaited me, seamlessly integrated with the dirt of mundane human experience.

Chapter Two

Journey to India—A Spiritual Quest

In the autumn of 1986, I flew to Bombay, India, with a small backpack, some extra toilet paper, and $1,300 USD in traveler's checks. I had lost my conscious sense of fear because I had already faced death and survived, and I believed in my heart that a spiritual force would sustain me. Brave, but obviously inexperienced and young, I was shocked to realize that I had flown to India with no real plan or objective, other than to embrace spirituality and the adventure of life. Courage resonated within me to venture into the unknown. It was the parallel of what I was doing with my own consciousness, boldly going forth into unexplored territory.

The airplane landed in the evening at Bombay airport. Culture shock struck immediately. A sensory onslaught impacted my senses. There were strange, distinctly human odors, and the visuals—hundreds of dark-skinned people dressed in unusual clothing, uttering words in a language I did not understand. I felt as if I had been beamed onto another planet. Hundreds of people were lined up inside, and I felt that they were all looking at me, as though I really were from a different planet.

Fortunately, an Indian man whom I had met on the airplane knew what I was in for and offered to assist me in finding a place to stay that night. We ventured outside, into the dark. It had rained earlier and the reflections of man-made light glistened off the wet, ancient environment. The streets, the concrete and stone walls and buildings all had the appearance of a thousand-year-old faded past, with layers and layers of color and history. Shadowy reflections shimmered with a rain-soaked wash. My feelings were powerfully alive and enchanted, and my mind was in awe.
