Metamaterials-by-Design: Theory, Technologies, and Vision is devoted to a comprehensive review of the latest advancements and current trends in the field of system-level-oriented metamaterial design methods, technologies, and future perspectives. Starting from the theoretical and methodological motivations of this research and covering macro-scale performance-driven design of volumetric and planar metamaterials, the book introduces advanced task-oriented modeling approaches. The approaches discussed include specific reference to their multi-scale / multi-physics customization in recent metamaterial science and engineering. In the introduction of these concepts there is particular attention paid to the illustration of the physical mechanisms and phenomena at the basis of the field manipulation capabilities enabled by metamaterials. Then, a wide set of recent application examples in microwave, terahertz, photonics, and optics scenarios is reviewed, highlighting the logical and methodological interconnections among the different domains. For example, contributions from industry and academic perspectives on active and passive metamaterial-enhanced devices for communications and sensing are included. The final part of the volume is aimed at providing a perspective regarding the current trends, future research, and application tracks in system-performance-driven metamaterial design methodologies and technologies, included potential applications in future reconfigurable and cognitive materials. Metamaterials-by-Design is suitable for researchers and engineers in academia and R&D in industry working in materials science, engineering, and related applications areas.

Acerca del autor
Nader Engheta is the H. Nedwill Ramsey Professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He received the BS degree (with highest rank) in electrical engineering from the University of Tehran, the MS degree in electrical engineering and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering (with a minor in physics) both from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). After spending one year as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Caltech and four years as a Senior Research Scientist at Kaman Sciences Corporation's Dikewood Division in Santa Monica, CA, he joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania, where he rose through the ranks and is currently H. Nedwill Ramsey Professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering. He is also a member of the Mahoney Institute of Neurological Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, and holds secondary appointments in the Department of Bioengineering and the Department of Physics and Astronomy at University of Pennsylvania. He was the graduate group chair of electrical engineering from July 1993 to June 1997.
Andrea Massa is a Full Professor of Electromagnetic Fields at the University of Trento, Italy, and the Director of the ELEDIA Research Center network of federated laboratories with more than 150 researchers located in Brunei, China, Czech, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Peru, and Tunisia. Moreover, he is holder of a Chang-Jiang Chair Professorship at UESTC (Chengdu, China), Visiting Research Professorhip at the University of Illinois at Chicago (Chicago, USA), Distinguished Visiting Professorship at Tsinghua University (Beijing, China), Visiting Professorship and IAS Distinguished Scholar at Tel Aviv University (Tel Aviv, Israel), and Professorship at CentraleSupélec (Paris, France). His research activities are mainly concerned with inverse problems, antenna analysis/synthesis, radar systems and signal processing, cross-layer optimization and planning of wireless/RF systems, system-by-design and material-by-design (metamaterials and reconfigurable-materials), and theory/applications of optimization techniques to engineering problems (communications, medicine, and biology).
Giacomo Oliveri is an Associate Professor at the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Mechanical Engineering, University of Trento, and a Board Member of the ELEDIA Research Center. He received his BS and MS degrees in Telecommunications Engineering and a PhD in Space Sciences and Engineering from the University of Genoa, Italy, in 2003, 2005, and 2009 respectively. He is currently also an Adjunct Professor at CentraleSupélec (Paris, France) where he is a member of the Laboratoire des signaux et systèmes. His research work is mainly focused on electromagnetic direct and inverse problems, metamaterials analysis and design, and antenna array synthesis.
