A WARDOGS Novel A Prequel to The Good Citizen
Everybody wants credit for saving the day. Not everybody stays to do the work.
Benjamin "Vibe" Hayes knows how to run a kitchen, command a crew, and make chaos look like competence. What he hasn't learned is the difference between being the man who gets things done and being the man everybody thinks did.
In the fall of 2020, with southwest Louisiana devastated by Hurricanes Laura and Delta, Ben trades the politics of film-set catering for a disaster-relief assignment. The work is exhausting, the money is uncertain, and the people depending on him are real. But when the official records begin claiming hundreds more meals than his crew actually served, Ben discovers that disaster recovery can be just as profitable for the people controlling the paperwork as it is necessary for those doing the work.
An opportunity overseas offers a fresh start.
Alongside Ronaldinho Batista, a sharp-tongued military veteran and communications specialist, Ben travels to Venezuela for what should be a straightforward equipment-recovery assignment. Instead, they encounter falsified industrial records, missing workers, powerful intermediaries, and an engineer determined to protect evidence that could expose something much larger.
As professional ambition gives way to personal loyalty, Ben finds himself drawn to a man whose integrity challenges everything he's built his reputation on. And every compromise Ben makes to preserve his image brings someone else closer to danger.
Because when the truth finally comes due, somebody always pays.
Set against the aftermath of real hurricanes and the dangerous machinery of private contracting, The Men Who Stayed Behind is an adult literary-political thriller about brotherhood, ambition, intimacy, institutional corruption, and the people whose sacrifices rarely make the official record.
Before The Good Citizen, there was the man who still believed being seen meant being worthy.
The WARDOGS story begins here. Can be read as a standalone novel.
