Morrow built its future on a medical miracle: traumatic memories can be removed from the people they are destroying.
What no one knows is that suffering is never erased.
It is moved.
Senior paramedic Wesley “Wes” Danner enters a fire beneath the city’s celebrated neural-research institute and emerges with an impossible ability. His body can absorb physical force—and the emotional residue of other people’s pain. When he survives gunfire to stop an armed attacker, then saves the man he nearly killed, the city gives him a name:
Mercy.
But every wound Wes carries leaves something behind. Fragments of fear, rage, and memory accumulate inside him, leading him toward crimes no court could prove and making it harder to tell justice from vengeance.
Then prominent citizens begin confessing after experiencing the terror of the people they harmed.
Wes fears the memories inside him are somehow escaping. The truth is more dangerous. Another survivor of the fire, Iona Serrin, can force memory into others—and she intends to make Morrow understand what its prosperity has cost. Hunting them both is Ronan Kells, a former rescue officer whose fear, grief, and attachments have been stripped away until obedience is almost all he has left.
Their powers lead back to Project Palinode, a secret program that relieved wealthy and influential patients by storing their suffering inside vulnerable human beings.
As Morrow prepares to celebrate the technology that saved it, Iona plans to expose the truth through the city’s neurological network. Her revelation could finally give Palinode’s victims a voice.
It could also violate thousands of innocent minds.
To stop her without helping the guilty bury what they have done, Wes must decide what mercy truly means: carrying another person’s pain, forcing the guilty to feel it—or surrendering the belief that suffering gives anyone the right to choose for someone else.
