## THIS BOOK: Classified as NEAR FINE: This is the 1966 edition. The book was published originally in 1966. The jacket is full colour and laminated. Previous owners Embossed their name on the free endpaper## ## When Weetman Pearson, the first Lord Cowdray, died at seventy in 1927, an American described him as 'one of the greatest pioneers ever sent out of Britain'. Certainly, no single Englishman has ever left so many lasting memorials to his enterprise in so many different countries. ## ## Pearson built up his grandfather's firm, S. Pearson and Son, from small beginnings in Bradford, into the world's leading contractors. Because his methods were often unorthodox and the results spectacular, 'the Pearson touch' became proverbial in circles as moving mountains was just of today's work. ## ## The most significant period of Pearson's life began in 1889 with the contract to drain Mexico City by means of a Grand Canal. It won him the friendship of President Porfirio Diåz and, to his most astonishing achievement, the development, at his own risk, of vast oilfields in Mexico which served to supply to the Royal Navy in the first World War. But simultaneously, he and his engineers were driving the famous Blackwall Tunnel under the Thames and East River Tunnels in New York. Building Dover Harbour, the harbour of Veracruz, the railway across the isthmus of Tehuantepec with its terminal ports, and so many other great works that the firm's battle honours extend literally from Chile to China. ## ## After the first World War, Cowdray withdrew from Mexico with so many millions made out of oil that his enemies accused him of taking more money out of the country than anyone since Cortés. They did not add that by accomplishing his public works? introducing electric light, tramways, pure water and modern sanitation in many cities?he had greatly enriched Mexico and himself. ## #### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note.
