Neuware - Nearly two thousand years ago, the most powerful man in the Roman world wrote reminders to himself. How should we respond to difficult people What deserves our attention What can we actually control How should we face adversity, uncertainty, and change What does it mean to live well Marcus Aurelius never intended his private reflections to become a book. Yet the thoughts he recorded while governing the Roman Empire have endured for centuries because the questions he confronted remain remarkably familiar. Meditations is an extraordinary exploration of character, responsibility, perspective, self-command, mortality, and the difficult work of becoming the person you believe you should be. Rather than presenting a polished philosophical argument, Marcus writes as someone practicing philosophy in real life, repeatedly reminding himself to act justly, think clearly, accept what he cannot control, and focus his attention on what truly matters. This Modern Reader's Edition from MindSpark Publishing preserves the historic English translation of classical scholar George Long while providing original material designed to make the work more accessible and rewarding for today's reader. This edition includes: - The complete George Long translation of Meditations, Books I-XII - An introduction to Marcus Aurelius and his remarkable life as emperor and philosopher - Stoicism in Plain English, explaining the essential ideas behind the philosophy - How to Read Meditations, a practical guide to approaching this unusual book - Background on George Long and his historic translation - Key Ideas in Meditations, connecting major themes across all twelve books - People, Places & Terms, a reader-friendly reference to important names, concepts, and historical context - Returning to Meditations, a closing reflection on making the book something to revisit rather than simply finish You do not need to be a philosopher to read Meditations. Nearly two thousand years ago, the most powerful man in the Roman world wrote reminders to himself.
How should we respond to difficult people? What deserves our attention? What can we actually control? How should we face adversity, uncertainty, and change? What does it mean to live well?
Marcus Aurelius never intended his private reflections to become a book.
This edition includes:
- The complete George Long translation of Meditations, Books I-XII
- An introduction to Marcus Aurelius and his remarkable life as emperor and philosopher
- Stoicism in Plain English, explaining the essential ideas behind the philosophy
- How to Read Meditations, a practical guide to approaching this unusual book
- Background on George Long and his historic translation
- Key Ideas in Meditations, connecting major themes across all twelve books
- People, Places & Terms, a reader-friendly reference to important names, concepts, and historical context
- Returning to Meditations, a closing reflection on making the book something to revisit rather than simply finish
You do not need to be a philosopher to read Meditations.
You do not need to become a Stoic.
You only need to be willing to examine how you think, how you act, and what you choose to do with the life in front of you.
The world Marcus knew disappeared long ago. The questions did not.
