Chapter One
"Wake up! Marvin, wake up!" Jane whispers. The little black and white puppy opens his eyes. "Look outside. It's snowing!"Marvin jumps up. He runs to the bedroom window and yelps.
"Marvin, look at the big flakes!" says Jane. She points at the falling snow.
Big, fluffy, white flakes float down through the air. There are so many-big ones, little ones, round ones and diamonds. Each flake is different from the others.
The snow is falling from the sky, Marvin," says Jane. "When we finish breakfast, we'll go outside and play in the snow."
Marvin watches the snow through the window while Jane eats her breakfast.
"Now we're ready," Jane calls. "Let's go out and play!"
As Jane ties a scarf around Marvin's neck, she tells him, "You have to stay warm while we play in the snow."
She opens the door. Marvin bounds out, into the cold air, and sniffs the snow. The green grass he played on yesterday is a sparkly white blanket today. Marvin puts one paw in the snow.
"Yikes, Marvin! It's cold! It's wet!" says Jane.
Marvin steps back and shakes his paw. A snowflake falls on his ear.
"Does it tickle?" says Jane. She giggles.
Another flake falls on the tip of Marvin's nose. He stares at it. It sparkles. Then it turns into a small puddle. He licks it off his nose.
"Surprise!" says Jane. "The snowflake on your nose turned to cool water."
Marvin takes a bite of snow. The cold white stuff crunches in his mouth and melts into water.
Bursting with puppy energy, Marvin takes off running. He runs around Jane twice and stops.
"Look, Marvin," says Jane. "You made a circle in the snow!"
Marvin looks at his track in the snow and wags his tail.
He runs again. This time he makes a square.
Then a triangle.
Then a rectangle.
"Marvin-stop!" Jane shouts. "Do you see all the shapes you are making?"
Marvin stops and looks at his trails in the snow. He wags his tail again.
Suddenly, his tummy is cold and wet. The snow is getting deeper. He has to hop like a bunny to run across it.
THUD! A ball made of snow lands in front of him. Marvin stops running and spins around. Jane holds up another white ball.
"Hey Marvin, look at my snowball!" Jane yells.
She throws the ball. Marvin chases it and catches it in his mouth. It crumbles and melts into cool water.
"Watch what else we can do with snow," says Jane. She makes a snowball and rolls it across the ground. It grows big. Soon it's bigger than Marvin.
"Help me push," says Jane.
Marvin pushes the snowball with his nose and front paws. Together, they make a very large ball.
"Good job, Marvin," says Jane. "Now we have a big snowball for our snowman's body. We need to make a small snowball for his head."
Jane places the small snowball on top of the big snowball.
"Find some pebbles," she says. "I'll bring a carrot and a hat from the house."
Jane and Marvin meet back at their snowman. Jane makes the eyes and a mouth with the pebbles and a nose with the carrot. "See how handsome our snowman is! But he needs one more thing."
Jane unties Marvin's scarf. "This will keep him warm all night long," she says.
Marvin and Jane go back into the house. Marvin curls up on a rug near the fire. He is tired and happy.
"Tomorrow you'll have new discoveries!" says Jane.
Marvin settles for a long, cozy nap.
