"I Married a Ranger" is an engaging and spirited memoir that offers a unique perspective on the early years of the United States National Park Service. Written by Dama Margaret Smith, the first woman to be professionally employed by the National Park Service at the Grand Canyon, this work chronicles her transition from a city-dweller to a pioneer in the rugged landscape of northern Arizona. Through her eyes, readers explore the challenges and splendors of life on the canyon's rim during the 1920s.

The narrative captures the essence of the American West, detailing the daily responsibilities of a park ranger and the resilient community that formed in one of nature's most awe-inspiring settings. Smith provides vivid descriptions of the Grand Canyon's shifting colors, the diverse wildlife, and the colorful characters-from intrepid tourists to seasoned woodsmen-who passed through the park. More than just a personal history, the book serves as a vital record of early conservation efforts and the evolving role of women in the federal service.

Rich with humor and admiration for the natural world, "I Married a Ranger" stands as a classic of Western literature. It is an essential read for those interested in the history of our national parks, the heritage of the American Southwest, and the enduring spirit of adventure.
