In fair condition. Boards are worn along edges with corners. Abrasions to surface of cloth, light staining and scratching. Spine extremes chipped. Front gutter lightly cracked. Interior toned with moderate foxing and light dampness staining throughout. Light rippling as a result. Inscription by author on title page. Binding tight and intact. Please see photos. The first book published on orthopedic surgery in the United States. Illustrated with full page plates of instruments and apparatus. Inscribed by Henry Jacob Bigelow, one of the most important surgeons of the 19th century. He was Professor of Surgery at Havard University School of Medicine. A dominating figure in Boston Medien for many decades, he is remembered for his Bigelow maneuver for hip dislocation, a technique for treatment of kidney stones, and other innovations. He is instrumental in bring the anesthetic possibilities of ether to the attention of medical men, and rescuing case of Phineas Gage from relative obscurity. He was a vocal opponent of vivisection, and plated a minor role in the apprehension of the culprit in the Parkman-Webster murder case.
