Hardcover. "Man of the Renaissance" offers a profound exploration of the life and literary contributions of Francois Rabelais, one of the most influential figures of the French Renaissance. Through the lens of scholar and translator Samuel Putnam, this work examines Rabelais not just as a creator of giants and a satirist of the Church, but as a quintessential representative of a transformative era. The text delves into the intellectual fervor of the 16th century, tracing Rabelais's journey from monastic life to medical practice and literary fame. By analyzing his major works, the book illuminates how Rabelais used wit, ribaldry, and humanistic philosophy to challenge the dogmas of his time. Putnam provides essential context for understanding the social and political upheavals that shaped Rabelais's worldview, highlighting his role in the development of Western thought. This volume serves as both an accessible biography and a critical study, celebrating the enduring legacy of a writer who championed intellectual freedom and the joy of human existence. It remains an essential resource for those interested in the evolution of the modern novel and the spirit of the Renaissance. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
