An extensively updated and revised version of a renowned book, this third edition draws on documentation only recently made available in the West. This authoritative revision begins with the arrival of the Slavs in the sixth century, and ends with Gorbachev, the demise of communism, and an outline of the Yeltsin years. Greater attention has been paid to developments in Russian provinces which in previous histories are largely ignored, and a history of Russian arts and cultural life generally is also more thoroughly covered, making this an essential new edition.
