Paperback. You believe that everything in your life is a choice. The decision to choose was never yours. Something older and faster has already chosen for you.The Machine That Runs You is my first book on Negative Philosophy and is a field guide to the automatic self: the apparatus of habit, identity, and reaction that decides before you do, then hands you the feeling of having decided. In fifty-six short dispatches, you'll find a map of how this machine assembles a version of you, defends it at any cost, and quietly runs the life you think you direct.Drawing on Spinoza and Gurdjieff, modern neuroscience and years of close observation, the book takes apart the comfortable story that we are the conscious authors of our lives. It looks at why competent people burn out, why insight so often makes us worse, why we choose the partners who unsettle us, and what remains when the machine stops managing. This is not a book about becoming a better person. It is about seeing clearly enough to stop the hallucinations about who you are. Self-knowledge is mostly subtraction. You'll find out how and why in this book. Prepare to be shocked. Prepare for your ego to reject every page. For readers of Spinoza, the Stoics, Gurdjieff, apophatic wisdom and Zen, alongside other realms of contemplative psychology and those looking at the hard questions about free will, these dispatches offer a quiet, exacting practice: not more self-improvement, but less self-deception. You believe that everything in your life is a choice. The decision to choose was never yours. Something older and faster has already chosen for you.
The Machine That Runs You is my first book on Negative Philosophy and is a field guide to the automatic self: the apparatus of habit, identity, and reaction that decides before you do, then hands you the feeling of having decided. In fifty-six short dispatches, you'll find a map of how this machine assembles a version of you, defends it at any cost, and quietly runs the life you think you direct.
Drawing on Spinoza and Gurdjieff, modern neuroscience and years of close observation, the book takes apart the comfortable story that we are the conscious authors of our lives.
