THE MULE. Este artículo no está disponible.THE MULE

It often begins with a sentence that sounds almost harmless: just one trip.

Three days away from home, a ticket already paid for, a sum of money that would take months to earn, and the promise that nothing will happen. For some, it means clearing a debt, paying the rent, helping a family member, escaping financial ruin, or finally getting ahead. For others, the journey begins with a lie, a romantic partner, a threat, an obligation, or a favor that slowly turns into something they can no longer walk away from.

BEYOND THE MULE enters the hidden world of the men and women used to carry illegal goods across borders, not only drugs but also cash, gold, controlled medication, forged documents, stolen goods, counterfeit products, protected wildlife and other forms of contraband. They are sometimes called mules, sometimes couriers, but behind those words are ordinary people who eventually find themselves standing in an airport queue, driving toward a border checkpoint, sitting inside a night bus or waiting beside a baggage carousel while knowing that a single question could change the rest of their lives.

Through 36 intense, human stories inspired by documented patterns, testimonies, investigations and real-world cases, the book explores what happens before, during and long after those journeys. Some protagonists know exactly what they are doing, some know only part of the truth, while others are manipulated, threatened or recruited by people they trust. A mother accepts because the rent is overdue, a woman discovers that her boyfriend has been using her, a desperate man convinces himself that three days of risk can repair years of debt, and another traveller spends an entire flight terrified not only of the authorities but of what is happening inside his own body.

This is not a manual about smuggling and it is not a celebration of criminal life. The real subject is the person carrying the risk while those who organised the journey remain somewhere else. The mule is the one who shows the passport, answers the questions, walks past the uniforms, watches another passenger being searched and wonders whether the next name called will be theirs.

Some are arrested at airports or land borders, others end up in hospitals or foreign prisons, some complete several journeys before being caught, while others are never arrested at all. But getting through does not necessarily mean escaping. Some return home with money and discover how quickly it disappears, some are never paid, some lose marriages, childhoods and years of freedom, and others continue to feel their heart race every time they enter an airport decades later.

Not everyone in these pages is a victim, and not everyone is simply a villain. Some were coerced, some were deceived and some made a conscious decision because the money seemed worth the danger. BEYOND THE MULE does not try to excuse them or condemn them again. It looks instead at the moment when an ordinary person tells themselves that it will only happen once, that they will be home in three days, that this one journey will solve everything.

Because some borders take only seconds to cross.

Others take a lifetime to leave behind.
