Paperback. "The Literary Works" provides a comprehensive scholarly examination of the diverse literary output of Count de Gobineau, a significant and complex figure in nineteenth-century French letters. Written by Arnold H. Rowbotham, this study moves beyond Gobineau's better-known sociological and historical theories to focus specifically on his contributions as a novelist, poet, and playwright. The work offers a detailed analysis of his major creative writings, exploring his stylistic evolution, philosophical themes, and the intellectual context of his time. Rowbotham evaluates the artistic merit of Gobineau's works, from his early romantic verses to his later prose masterpieces. By situating these writings within the broader landscape of European literature, the author highlights the tensions between Gobineau's aristocratic ideals and the changing social realities of the era. This volume serves as an essential resource for scholars of French literature and intellectual history, providing deep insights into a writer whose influence extended across political and cultural boundaries. "The Literary Works" remains a vital reference for understanding the interplay between individual creative expression and nineteenth-century thought. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
