Paperback. Saint Seraphim of Sarov was a Russian Orthodox saint and forest hermit of Sarov who entered the wilderness to seek the uncreated light. How does a merchant boy from Kursk survive a fall from a scaffolding and grow into a hieromonk who sees Christ at the altar? The path to holiness begins in the timbered home of a merchant family in Kursk, where young Prokhor Moshnin learns the rhythms of piety from his mother, Agathia. His childhood is marked by sudden interventions, from surviving a plummet from an unfinished bell tower to a miraculous healing through the passing icon of the Theotokos. After a pilgrimage to Kiev and a prophetic word from the elder Dorothea, he walks hundreds of miles to Sarov Monastery bearing an iron cross placed around his neck by his mother. There he embraces the grueling work of a novice, enduring a three year illness and a visitation from two radiant figures before receiving his monastic tonsure and the name Seraphim. The narrative follows this burning young hieromonk to the altar on Holy Thursday, where a vision of Christ leaves him transfigured, and stops at the threshold of the forest where his isolation will begin.Providential childhood rescues: a boy survives a plummet from a bell tower and is healed by the passing icon of the Theotokos.Monastic obedience learned: a willing novice carries firewood, submits to his elder, and endures three years of severe illness before a celestial visitation.Uncreated light witnessed: a hieromonk beholds Christ entering the temple and stands transfigured before his brothers.Book One of The Wonderworker of Sarov: A Life in Three Books. The second volume traces his woodland isolation and his reception of multitudes in My Joy! Christ Is Risen!; the final text examines his spiritual instructions and the survival of his remains through state persecution in Acquire a Peaceful Spirit.Readers seeking a companion to the youth of Prokhor Moshnin in Kursk and a way into his grueling novitiate at Sarov Monastery. Book One traces the early life of Saint Seraphim of Sarov from his miraculous childhood in Kursk to his monastic tonsure at Sarov. This item is printed on demand. He Is of Our Lineage: The Making of a God-Bearer opens where every life opens - not with a halo, but with a household. A mother lighting a candle. A child in Kursk who would fall from a great height and live. A young man who heard something in Kiev that changed the direction of everything, and then took the road to Sarov and did not turn back.
This is the first volume in a three-part life of St. Seraphim of Sarov. It traces his formation from merchant's son to novice to the monk who entered the forest and let the forest do its work. The movement is unhurried because the making of a God-bearer is unhurried - shaped in learning and smallness, lit from within at an altar, carried forward through years the world could not see.
What the Chapters Carry- The candle his mother lit - the household, the lineage, the first kindling of a life given toward God
- The fall that did not kill him - Providence moving through an ordinary disaster
- The icon through the streets and a voice in Kiev - the sacred encounters that turned him toward his vocation
- The road to Sarov and the discipline of becoming small - years of formation in community, labor, and obedience
- Fire at the altar - what was given to him there, and what it cost
- What the forest was waiting for - the long, hidden ripening of a saint
St. Seraphim was of our lineage: born of a woman, shaped in a household, formed in community, broken open by grace. He Is of Our Lineage does not keep him safely enshrined. It follows him through the actual years - the struggles, the silences, the slow and costly work of becoming what God intends every soul to become.
For Orthodox Christians, for seekers, and for all who have held his icon and wanted to know the man behind the golden light.
