Paperback. In a hollowed-out iron-range town in far northern Wisconsin, where a dead mine's headframe is still floodlit every night and the Navy's abandoned antenna runs a hundred-foot scar straight through the national forest, a night-shift sleep technician finds something in an old man's brainwaves that has no business being there: a narrow spike at 7.83 hertz, steady as a nail, present only when the patient is unconscious. Erik Rautio came home to Vaara to be near the sister he spent nineteen years not visiting - twenty-two years in the same second-floor room, eyes open, nobody home, one of nineteen local children enrolled in a sleep study in 2004 who went under and did not come back. What he uncovers across the thirteen months that follow is a Cold War experiment nobody believed would work, an old scientist carrying a debt he cannot pay, and the possibility that the patients every instrument has written off have been awake down there the entire time, talking, with no one on earth tuned to the frequency. Lights Out is a novel about the moral weight of measurement - about who gets believed and who gets charted, about what a nurse has known for nineteen years that a machine will never certify, and about the unbearable arithmetic of a conversation in which every word costs the person you love something she cannot get back. In the end it turns on the oldest and least defensible act of faith there is: that you say it out loud, into the cold, whether or not anyone can prove that it lands. This item is printed on demand.
